Eight signals, in the order they usually arrive
You cannot feel tilt reliably from the inside — by definition you are the unreliable narrator. So the signals below are written as things someone else could observe: a stake, a pause, a sentence, a tap.
-
01
The decision time collapses
Observable: three considered stakes take ten minutes; the next five take ninety seconds.
Why it matters: the plan you wrote was built at normal speed. Speed is how you skip it.
Interrupt: make the next stake wait one full minute on purpose. -
02
Stakes drift up without a decision
Observable: a unit that was 1% of the bankroll is 3% by the end of the night, and you cannot point to the moment you changed it.
Why it matters: drift is how limits die — not by a decision, but by increments.
Interrupt: re-read the stake you wrote down and match it exactly. -
03
The word "back" enters the sentence
Observable: the goal is no longer a good decision, it is a balance.
Why it matters: chasing a number turns a negative-expectation activity into a guaranteed repeated one.
Interrupt: say the goal out loud. If it is a number, close the session. -
04
Markets you cannot explain
Observable: you are in a market you would not defend in one sentence to a friend.
Why it matters: the margin you accept is the same, but the information you have is worse.
Interrupt: one sentence or no stake. -
05
Rules become negotiable, then optional
Observable: "usually I stop at three losses" becomes "this run is different".
Why it matters: a rule you can renegotiate mid-session is a preference, not a limit.
Interrupt: the limit moves only before a session, never during one. -
06
Physical tells
Observable: jaw, shoulders, breathing, or the fact that you have not stood up in two hours.
Why it matters: arousal narrows attention on to the immediate outcome and away from the plan.
Interrupt: stand up and leave the device for the length of one reset. -
07
Hiding it
Observable: muting a notification, closing a tab when someone walks in, or not mentioning the session afterwards.
Why it matters: concealment is the most reliable early marker that the activity is no longer recreational.
Interrupt: tell one person the real number today. -
08
Staking to change a mood
Observable: the session started because of boredom, anger, or a bad day rather than a considered interest in a match.
Why it matters: when the purpose is emotional regulation, no result will satisfy it.
Interrupt: this is the signal to take a longer break and use a support service if it recurs.
Signals 1 to 5 are recoverable in-session. 6 to 8 are not.
Once concealment or mood-driven staking is in play, the useful action stops being a better stake and starts being a break, a limit set with the operator, or a conversation with a support service.
